The Cherry and Peach and Marzipan Crostata

Mind you, this is a variation to the original cherry crostata recipe I had found here. The crostata is surprisingly easy to make, but I would personally make a few minor improvements to the original recipe.

Firstly, the recipe says to refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and I was like ''yay, only 30 minutes!'' when the truth is that the dough needs to rest in the fridge for a good hour, two, if you don't mind the waiting because it needs to be firm enough. Trust me, rolling ooey gooey pastry is not fun. I speak from experience.
Secondly, I have to say that I found the dough in this recipe to be a bit too bland, I am definitely adding more sugar, cinnamon and maybe even an egg next time, what the heck, let's go crazy. Luckily, there are plenty variations of crostatas you can play with, which to me, is the whole point of baking: to play and have fun. And then eat and not care about the calories:)
What I like about this crostata is the combination of the crispiness of the dough
and the juiciness of the fruit. I can't wait to bake another one, I was having a ball!

Teja xoxo

Strawberries & Cream with a Twist

Strawberries and Cream is one of my favorite desserts, and, luckily, also one of the simplest to make. Because I find strawberries with only cream a bit boring, with all due respect to the strawberries, I always make my dessert with a bit of a twist. I mean the cream is so white, it just calls for a nice topping, don't you think?

You'll need:
500 g fresh strawberries
100 ml whipping cream
1 Milka Wafelini bar (but any chocolate bar will do)
Meat mallet
1 plastic food bag
  1. Wash the strawberries, removing the stems.
  2. Whip the cream until stiff.
  3. SPECIAL TIP: I actually saw Jamie Oliver do this on TV and I thought it was awesome: Put the chocolate bar of your choice into the food plastic bag and pound the bar into smaller chunks with a meat mallet. That way you don't create a mess, as all the chocolatey chunks stay inside the plastic food bag:)
  4. Place the strawberries into a pretty bowl, I chose a vintage one, drop a spoonful of whipped cream onto the strawberries and decorate with chunks of your favorite chocolate bar.

My Turquoise Summer

Okay, perhaps coffee and nail polish do not mix very well, but I’ve decided that this particular shade should be besties with coffee because it’s the *it shade* of the summer. Why coffee, do you ask? Because I can’t live without itJ and as it happens, I can’t live without this awesome shade of turquoise Gel Effect Nail Enamel by Deborah Milano.

Though the advertisement says that ‘’the new gel EFFECT nail enamels by Deborah Milano imparts mirror-like shine, amazing depth of color, and a spectacular “plumping” effect with just one coat,'' I would have to respectfully disagree. The first coat is a bit streaky, so do add another one. After that, this nail polish does deliver everything that the advertisement says, from the rich color to perfect coverage to the “gel like” surface – without using UV light.
I am really pleased with this particular kind of nail polish and I would definitely repurchase it – in all shadesJ
As far as summer shades of nail polish are concerned, the summer of 2014 is all about pale shades of blues and turquoises, pastels and nudes, a complete opposite of summer 2013, when women had been proudly displaying their neon talons.

So, neon is out, pastels are in. Don’t believe me? Check out the L’Oreal Summer 2014 Nail Collection:
Essie is also following the summer trends with pastels, though with little pops of slightly stronger shades, such as coral red, my personal favorite.
OPI is avoiding nude tones and is sticking to minks and different shades of corals (total win, want to have the entire collection!)

Hope you liked this post:)

A Vintage Saturday

Finally, after months of waiting and really rainy weather, on the first sunny and warm day since forever, the first vintage market of the season has been held in Tabor. Once again, I have to say this, finally! The last vintage market was organized in October for Halloween:S But on the other hand, there is something special about browsing for a bargain on a sunny day in the summer:) The only thing I really missed about this Vintage Saturday was free Cockta, which is a kind of Slovene Coca-cola:) It would add that special touch of the old days in Yugoslavia, when Slovenia was virtually untouched by the West.

Recipe: Party Muffins

I am a firm believer that every chocolate chip muffin needs a cute outfit:) That's why I was over the moon when I came across these cute tulip-shaped muffin paper cups in drogerie markt. They cost about 2 euros and you get 24 cups, which is a total bargain, and they come in different colors.

I've been admiring these cups in a local patisserie for ages; I've always wondered where they got these from- drogerie markt, of course. D-oh! I seriously believe that these muffin cups have special magical powers since they can make the most boring of muffins look like it's come our of a pastry shop!

Makes 24:

700 g/6 cups plain flour
4 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
180 g unrefined dark brown sugar (I used Billington’s Natural Molasses Sugar)
50 g caster sugar
4 eggs
600 ml/2 ½ cups milk
230 g butter
2 tsp vanilla essence
100 g semi-sweet chocolate chips
50 g cocoa powder

1 Preheat the oven to 200C/400F. Grease the muffin tins.

2 Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a large mixing bowl.

3 Whisk together milk, vanilla essence and sugar, until frothy.

4 Place the eggs and butter in a separate bowl and whisk together well. Gently fold in the flour and milk mixture, until the consistency of the dough is lovely and smooth.

5 Gently stir in the chocolate chips.

6 Spoon the mixture into the muffin cups, filling them just below the top. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, until well risen and browned.

BON APETIT EVERYBODY!

Love,

Teja xoxox
